Maltese Design Studio Nominated For International Breakthrough Talent Award
Architect Jonathan Mizzi and his team at Mizzi Studio – based in London and Malta – have just been nominated for the FX Breakthrough Talent Award 2017. The studio was nominated with just three other contenders by experts in the industry.
The awards themselves are in their 19th edition, and a huge event in the design world. Last year’s awards ceremony was attended by over 1,400 architects and designers from all over the world. So you get the picture – it’s a massive deal!
Just to give you a taste of why this local talent has been singled out in the highly competitive design industry – think back to his studio’s fabulous creation for Colicci at Westfield London. This marvellous copper creation has already been raking in the accolades, having been shortlisted in four categories at the International Restaurant & Bar Design Awards, as well as a win at the Retail Week Interiors Awards for Store Design of the Year 2014.
The multidisciplinary studio works across all scales and sectors, creating architecture, industrial design, lighting, interactive design and commercial artworks – like their sumptuous ‘teardrop’ sculpture for the Mondrian Hotel Spa.
For this project the studio was contacted by world renowned designer Tom Dixon to develop the design of an iconic sculpture sketched by Dixon himself. Mizzi and his team brought the design to three-dimensional life and managed its production process – creating the giant suspended drop from fibre glass gilded with copper.
The team’s portfolio also includes furniture design. Their most recent creation is the ‘Awkward Series’ furniture range, which is about to be exhibited at the London Design Festival 2017 – another industry big hitter – between the 17th and 20th September, at Decorex in Sion Park.
Mizzi’s love for science fiction and high-tech architecture is a thread that runs through the studio’s varied portfolio. The team works with loads of exciting materials, fluid forms, and a cheeky sense of fun. It really isn’t hard to see why they’ve been nominated, although the team itself was shocked, and completely delighted, to receive the news.
“We are flattered – and quite shocked – to be nominated,” Mizzi told Lovin Malta. “It’s a very prestigious award and to know that our work is being recognised on an international scale is very rewarding and motivating for us all at our studio”.
The even bigger news is that anyone from the general public can vote for this super local talent to win the prestigious title (which is only one of four categories that can be voted for by the public). All you have to do is visit the awards page and submit your vote! The winners will be announced on the 29th November 2017 in London.
Till then – go Mizzi Studio!
