Calling all wrestling enthusiasts. Andrew Azzopardi and his training friend – Gary Giordimaina, have officially qualified to represent Malta in this year’s under-23 European Championships (taking place in Serbia between the 4th and 7th March 2019).

This is one of the biggest competitions in the Olympic world, so let’s all give these boys the credit they are due. The best participants from all around Europe will be competing, so this is kind of a big deal.

Andrew and Gary both train at the Malta Amateur Wrestling Federation (owned by Gary’s father) and they specialise in freestyle wrestling, where attacking any body part is permitted.

Although training buddies, they’ve been split into two separate categories. Andrew will be representing the 70kg category, whilst Gary will be flying the flag for the smallest category (57kg).

The match can be live streamed from United World Wrestling and they’ll be accompanied by coaches Abraham Vassallo and Jesmond Giordimaina.
