A Maltese chat service that offers 24/7 free and confidential support to people going through mental health difficulties has been nominated for a European award.

Olli.Chat, a partnership between mental health NGO Richmond Foundation and Epic’s CSR arm Epic for Good, is one of six finalists in the category of technology tools at the upcoming European Social Services awards.

Launched last year in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Olli.Chat was set up to address concern among mental health professionals that younger people weren’t seeking help through traditional means despite a report showing they experience negative emotions and depressive feelings just as often as older citizens.

The platform was launched with the idea that youths feel more comfortable chatting than speaking about their problems in person or via telephone, however the service is complemented by in person support when required.

It is now one of six projects that have been nominated for the award, with the other nominees originating in Sweden, the USA, Spain, Germany, and the UK.

“The Foundation will always need resources to keep refining its operation and empower the people in its care, so we are grateful and excited about this partnership which aims to provide a direct and constant connection to those who are looking for some support,” Richmond Foundation CEO Stephanie Dimech Sant said.

“We are committed to help build communities’ and individuals’ ability to seek the support they need to stay mentally healthy and strong.”

Epic’s Chief Marketing Officer Karl Galea said that a lack of social connection can have serious implications on mental health.

“This is exactly the type of positive social initiative Epic is keen to partner with, providing the fastest connectivity to everyone and highlighting that a great network goes beyond the technology to bring about positive change to everyday interactions,” he said.

The winner will be announced in an award ceremony that will be held in Málaga, Spain on 17th and 18th November.
