Maltese Lawyer Questions Justice System Following Controversial Trial Outcome And Tragic Gżira Murder
Prominent lawyer and activist Lara Dimitrijevic has spoken out about Pelin Kaya‘s devastating death and the controversial verdict of the trial of the tragic murder of Sion Grech.
Dimitrijevic questioned the efficiency of the island’s justice system through a moving post on her social media.
“I work in the justice sector and I know it’s not easy, but I can’t help but wonder if what we saw in these two days could have been prevented in some way.”
“Life can be really hard and cruel,” she prefaced, “but the lack of justice makes it so much worse.”
“The loss of Pelin shocked everyone once again. She was going about her business and in a split second, her life was taken because there are people who think that they have the power to do that.”
Dimitrijevic then went on to speak about Sion.
“I can’t even begin to imagine the anger that Sion’s family has, the fear of all those who testified in her trial and had to air out their personal lives.”
Dimitrijevic went on to admit that she understands how difficult it is for those who work within the justice system in Malta, however, she couldn’t help but question whether everything that happened could have been “prevented” in some way.
“Camilleri was under probation from 2021, was he being monitored? Had he ever been brought up on a probation violation?”
Meanwhile, she went on to question the length of the judicial procedures regarding the trial of Sion’s murder.
“The compilation [of evidence] lasted around four years and a hearing with the jury happened another four years later.”
“While I understand that everyone is entitled to protect their rights, I can’t help but ask who is looking after the interests of the victims and their families?”
Dimitrijevic took this opportunity to bring up another possibly preventable tragedy to highlight the sore lack of justice the island has seen.
“An inquiry was held after the femicide of Bernice, a loss that should never have happened and whose outcome we are still waiting for.”
“When will there be justice.”
Lovin Malta extends its deepest condolences to the families of all victims in Malta awaiting justice.
