A Maltese man attacked a Somali man twice in one night before being caught by authorities.

Justin Mallia, a 24-year-old, from Santa Lucija, was charged in court with aggravated theft, holding the victim against his will and slightly injuring him.

Mallia was out on bail at the time.

The first attack, which the victim says was unprovoked, occurred when Mallia drove past a Marsa bar, stepped out of his car, and attacked the Somali man, who was a stranger to him. Mallia then drove off.

Later that evening at around 9pm, the victim spotted Mallia whilst walking along Triq is-Serkin, and took out his phone to take photos and videos of his aggressor so as to make a report to the police.

After noticing the Somali man, Mallia ran after him, attacked him, and snatched his belongings away, which included his phone and around €700 in cash.

Mallia was charged with aggravated theft, holding the victim against his will and slightly injuring him. He pleaded not guilty.

He was also charged with breaching two past bail decrees and relapsing.

The court announced that a decision on bail would be decided upon in chambers.

Lawyers Franco Debono and Francesca Zarb were on the defence counsel.
