A 59-year-old Maltese man has been jailed for 12 years after pleading guilty to seven counts of rape of his partner’s three children over an extended period of time.

Lawrence Micallef pleaded guilty yesterday, before his trial by jury could commence, and was sentenced by judge Consuelo Scerri Herrera today.

In the court case, police recounted how Micallef had been seeing his partner since 2009 but the relationship ended in 2019 after her younger boy, who was aged 12 at the time, revealed he had been sexually abusing him and his siblings.

TVM reported that the boy recounted how the abuse started when he was nine years old and spotted his 18-year-old brother performing oral sex on Micallef. The younger boy ran away and later spoke to his brother, who told him that he couldn’t do anything about it because Micallef had threatened to throw him off Għar Ħasan if he didn’t comply.

The younger boy eventually confronted Micallef, who ended up sexually abusing him too. It emerged in court that the sexual abuse would occur on a regular basis and that Micallef would sometimes watch child pornography on the younger boy’s phone before abusing him.

Micallef also pled guilty to raping their 13-year-old sister in December 2018. He had picked her up from school in his van, drove her to Ħal Far and asked her to “do what adults did”. When she refused, he poked his finger into her genital area.

The abuse occurred while the mother was undergoing chemotherapy and several other operations for cancer and other health problems.

In fact, the younger boy said he didn’t speak out earlier because Micallef had warned him that were he to do so, Micallef would end up in prison, the boy would end up in an institution and his mother would die.

However, he decided to speak after he felt Micallef was trying to implicate his uncle when he asked him why he was having so many sleepovers at his uncle’s place. The child then told his mother that it was Micallef who had been abusing him for there years and not his uncle.
