A Maltese man was released after he was found guilty of insult and harassment towards his wife.

The court found the 61-year-old man guilty and still released him on the condition that he does not commit any further offenses within two weeks after being granted bail.

The fight started at around 7.45am, with a heated argument that occurred between the couple, it ended with the man hitting his wife in the face, resulting in her losing consciousness.

Initially, it was alleged that he had inflicted serious injuries on the woman, but evidence showed that the injury was actually minor.

The woman claimed that this was not the first incident of violence from her husband’s side, who has a gambling addiction.

The man, however, also accused the woman of pushing him against a wall, he also denied having a gambling addiction. Their testimonies weren’t matching up.

Their daughter testified that she was working when her mother approached her crying. She said that both she and her mother needed financial assistance because their father only gives her €50 per month.

When confronted about the incidents and how they escalated, the man stated – “She knows what she did. She knows what she did”.

Magistrate Nadine Lia said that she had no doubts about the testimony of the girl. She noted that in the woman’s testimony, there were no inconsistencies, but the man’s testimony remained doubtful.

She said that from the evidence presented, it was proven that he hit his wife, but there was no evidence that he insulted or threatened her.

Therefore, she imposed a conditional release without further offenses for a period of two weeks, he was also ordered to pay €1,000 and was placed under a restraining order for one year from the date of the sentence.
