Maltese Man Will Face Drug Trafficking Charges In Italy

A Maltese man will be extradited to Italy to face drug trafficking charges.
John Spiteri, 56, was arrested in June after a European Arrest Warrant was issued in Catania. He is facing charges concerning his involvement in a major drug trafficking organisation that mostly trafficked cannabis and cannabis-related drugs.
He is facing a lengthy sentence, with the cases carrying a total term of imprisonment of up to 40 years.
The extradition request was actually turned down the first time of asking due to a lack of information. However, the Attorney General’s office appealed the request with the missing information, known as ‘Form A’, submitted in full.
Evidence presented during the case involved communication between Spiteri and Rosario Amico, the leader of the organisation.
The operation involved transporting drugs from Albania to Sicily before distributing them across the Italian and Maltese markets. Photos also exist corroborating the evidence.
Spiteri was known as “a permanent purchaser of marijuana” and communication involves plans to smuggle the drugs into Malta. The drugs were allegedly transported in containers.
The case is also linked to the police seizing an 84kg cannabis haul discovered furniture hidden in a car following an arrest in Malta. Communications exist showing a dispute between the people involved in the organisation.
Spiteri will not be sent back just yet and have seven days to appeal the decision.
