Maltese MEP To Lead EU Talks On Safer, Fairer Products In The Single Market

Maltese MEP Peter Agius has landed a key role in the conversation of product safety and compliance across the European Union.
Agius will be leading negotiations on behalf of the European People’s Party (EPP) as the European Parliament prepares to adopt new rules under the New Legislative Framework—a set of policies that applies to all products sold in the EU’s single market.
At the heart of these talks are some big-picture goals: reducing red tape for businesses, making products safer for consumers, and ensuring fair competition—especially when it comes to products imported from outside the EU, like China.
“I’ll be pushing for a Europe with less bureaucracy for business and more safety for consumers,” Agius said, “while opening up opportunities for European businesses—particularly small and family-run businesses which are the backbone of our economy, including in Malta.”
He stressed the importance of giving European businesses a fair shot at competing, both inside and outside the bloc.
“This cannot happen unless we secure a level playing field with competition from China and the rest of the world,” he explained. “The growth of our businesses and our continued investment in innovation translate into safer and better products—and ultimately, better jobs for our workers.”
With these negotiations expected to ramp up over the coming months, Agius says his goal is to harness the full power of the EU’s single market to support local businesses and consumers alike.
