Kids are masters at getting what they want, but one boy just figured out the quickest way to take up a new sport – and all it took was 127 messages.

Maltese PN MEP Roberta Metsola’s eldest son wanted to start tennis lessons, and felt that the best way to really get the point across was by sending 127 over messages, saying nothing more than: “Mummy”.

Fearing the worst, the Maltese MEP soon found out the real reason for all the messages.

“127 messages & 10 minutes later, turns out my eldest son wasn’t being kidnapped or in any sort of danger but he really, really, wanted to let me know that he wants to start tennis lessons”

“Political negotiations are easier”

Metsola confirmed that the ruse had worked – her son will be starting tennis lessons next week

“While I was going over my notes on the new EU border law I am leading, my phone started to vibrate,” Metsola told Lovin Malta. “I managed to ignore it for all of 10 minutes before getting the fright of my life when I saw 130 messages from my eldest son (who has recently been allowed WhatsApp privileges) who was with my parents at the time. Turns out after all he didn’t want to alert me to some imminent danger but wanted to prove his point that he needed tennis lessons!”

She laughs about the messages now that she knows what they were all about

“It was funny, but I shared it because I know that it is the same situation that so many parents of young children are accustomed to, and to underline the message to people out there thinking about a career in politics: the struggle is real, but life in politics is compatible with being a parent, with being a mother – We can do it!” she said clearly.

And when all was said and done, she gave her son props for his unique method of negotiation.

“I had a sneaking admiration for his persistence, so next week I’ll take him to tennis and hope his dedication lasts as long!” she laughed.

Some people said the boy’s perseverance and determination reminded them of someone else
