A police officer has been arrested for allegedly stealing synthetic drugs from the lost and found storage of the Hamrun police station.

The sergeant, who was stationed at the same police station, was arrested on Friday morning while he was on duty, state broadcaster TVM reported.

A raid of his locker revealed the synthetic drugs, as well as other items which had been stored in the lost and found storage. He was taken to the police headquarters in Floriana for further investigation and is currently out on forced leave. Police aren’t excluding charging him in court.

Yesterday, health minister Chris Fearne revealed the government is planning to change the law to allow the authorities to criminalise entire compounds of drugs, a move intended to close the loophole exploited by drug producers who constantly tweak the chemical substance of their drugs so as to stay one step ahead of the law.
