Maltese People Call For ‘Hitler Style’ Gassing Of Migrants As NGO Urges Police To React
Death threats to migrants published on social media should be reported directly to the police, NGO Aditus has said.
Following the riots at the Ħal Far open centre on Sunday, social media was awash with death threats against migrants, with some people saying they should be shot at, burned or gassed.
“They must be gassed Hitler style,” at least two people said.
“Shoot at them… women, men and children, kill them all,” another commented.
Others praised Lorin Scicluna and Francesco Fenech, the two young soldiers who have been charged with the drive-by murder of Ivorian migrant Lassana Cisse Souleymane.
Aditus urged people to take screenshots of these comments, copy the site URL and file an online police report with the words ‘Hate speech’ included.
“Responding to violence with this language does absolutely nothing to deal with or solve the problem. Far from it,” it said.
Home Affairs Minister Michael Farrugia confirmed that around 300 people were involved in Monday’s riot, during which vehicles of open centre employees were burned, a police officer slightly injured, security cameras broken and offices pillaged. Around 107 people have been arrested, some of whom are expected to be prosecuted.
