Maltese Photographer’s Emotional Shot Featured In Roundup Of ‘Most Mesmerising’ Photos From The World Cup

One of Malta’s best photographers has done it again. Darrin Zammit Lupi’s name often pops up when it comes to international photography awards, and this time, he was featured in an international roundup of the 2018 World Cup alongside some of the world’s best.

“I was in Brussels to cover the NATO summit,” Darrin told Lovin Malta. “But once Belgium were in the semifinals, Reuters asked me to cover the fan zone at Place Dumon in Brussels.”

On that fateful night, Belgium had lost 1-0 to France, who went on to win the World Cup. It was here that Zammit Lupi managed to get an emotionally-charged shot which made it to the UK Business Insider for an article showcasing the most beautiful photos taking at this year’s World Cup in Russia.

“Thousands of Belgians were in despair,” Darrin told Lovin Malta. “That was a few minutes before the final whistle during the semi final. I was at a fan zone in Brussels.”

The photojournalist, who works with Reuters took this amazing shot during the France vs Belgium match. The emotional shot was taken during the loss to France which Belgium suffered.

“The square was so packed that police were turning people away,” Darrin said. “Being under the big screen and facing the crowd, I couldn’t really watch the game myself. People’s emotions and reactions were intense throughout the match.”

“One could almost follow the game just by watching people’s faces and reactions.”

“Sometimes people were so over-enthusiastic that I’d think they were about to score a goal, and then I’d realise the Belgians simply took possession of the ball on the far end of the pitch.” Zammit Lupi said.

Zammit Lupi’s photos were also featured in the Reuter’s Best of the World Cup Photos.
