Maltese Policeman Continues To Fight For His Life After Hit-And-Run Causes Collapsed Lung And Amputation

Hit-and-run police victim Simon Schembri continues to fight for his life this morning after receiving several emergency procedures at Mater Dei Hospital.

Among his many injuries Schembri suffered a collapsed lung and had his right arm amputated from the elbow down. Eyewitnesses described the gruesome first sight of the victim to TVM, where it was said his right arm’s flesh had been “entirely eaten away”.

Reported injuries also include a broken pelvis and ribs as well as severe road burns all along his face and abdomen, and multiple fractures across his body.

The police constable and father-of-three was hit by an 17-year-old driver who was “known to the police”. Since the incident there has been an outpouring of love for Schembri, who was called a “hero” by many.

Arraignment of the underage driver may happen as early as today, according to the Times of Malta, and the teenager is likely to face charges of attempted murder.
