Maltese Policeman Wins Big At International Marathon

Article Featured Image

It’s been a great few weeks for Maltese athletes. First we had Graham Borg’s incredible showing at the Vattenfall triathlon, then Yazmin Zammit Stevens record-breaking performance at the Taipei World University games, and now we have our next international athletic star: a local policeman.

Andrew Grech competed in the PHILIPS half-marathon in Pila, Poland this week and placed 1st in the police category. Grech managed to complete the whole thing in just over 1 hour and 11 minutes. Pretty impressive considering how many jokes are made about Maltese policemen and their level of fitness.

The marathon was open to regular athletes as well as police officers from all over Europe. Mr Grech came 13th out of a total of 3,640 total athletes, but 1st in the police category.

Other delegates from the Maltese team were Johann Mifsud (32nd police, 781st total) and David Bezzina (35th police, 831st total), as well as Kevin Valletta, who’s their friend but didn’t run under the police team (1,419th total). The Maltese Police Force Team eventually finished 4th overall.

Here’s to our boys in blue for showing the rest of Europe how it’s done!
