A 30-year-old prisoner died today after he was found unconscious in his cell a day earlier.

The Corradino Prison said in a statement that the prisoner, who has been identified as a Maltese man from Żabbar, was found unconscious in his cell yesterday. Prison officials administered first aid immediately and an ambulance was called in to send him to Mater Dei. However, he died the following day.

An internal investigation and a magisterial inquiry are ongoing to establish the cause of his death.

PN MP Beppe Fenech Adami, the Opposition’s spokesperson for home affairs, noted that this was the third death at the prison within a few months and demanded an urgent explanation from the authorities.
