Maltese Race Driver Crashes Into Crowd In Sicily, Injuring Eight
An experienced Maltese race driver lost control of his car in a hillclimb race in Piedimonte (Sicily) this morning, injuring eight people. The driver, Ryan Mangion, lost control of his Ford Escort Mk 1 in a curve and ended up swerving onto the crowd.
Two people, a woman and a 15-year-old boy, were seriously injured and taken to hospital by helicopter. Since the car was equipped with a driver’s safety cage and hit the passenger’s side, Mangion was not hurt.
Another two Maltese drivers were also taking part in the event, which was suspended after the crash at 11.30am. The Malta Motorsport Federation has said it is contact with the Maltese delegation in Sicily.
