Maltese Restaurants Rank New Skills Pass As Their Greatest Challenge

The new skills pass for hospitality workers is proving to be a major headache for the industry.
Vincent Marmara’s latest survey for the Association of Catering Establishments asked restaurant owners (a sample size of 250 respondents) to rank their greatest challenges.
The Skills Pass, which was launched last year for third-country nationals and is set to be extended to Maltese and EU nationals next year, emerged on top with an average score of 2.0.
The BCRS bottle scheme came in second place, human resources in third, waste collection in general in fourth, and excess establishments in fifth.

The skills pass, which costs €475, requires hospitality workers to successfully complete assessments in English proficiency, knowledge of Malta’s tourism industry, and practical skills before they can begin working in Malta.
