Maltese Roads Give The Middle Finger To Safety Standards
Road safety in Malta is getting worse instead of better over the last few years, and we’re the only EU nation to see this trend. In a recent study by the European Commission Malta’s roads are over 40% less safe than they were back in 2010.
Greece, Estonia and Latvia all saw huge drops in the number of fatal accidents when compared to the same period back in 2010. Some 25,000 people died in road accidents across the EU in 2017 alone.
In addition to the deaths, around 135,000 people were injured on the road last year, including a large number of pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. “Road safety is of course a responsibility shared with the member states, but I believe that the EU can do more to better protect Europeans,” said Violeta Bulc, the EU’s Commissioner for Transport.
Posting the graph to Facebook, one page (Stand Up For Europe) asked the obvious question: what’s happening in Malta? Facebook denizens and EU citizens all had a lot to say on the issue.
