Maltese Table Tennis Champion Says MOC Officials Who Decided To Exclude Him Should Be Removed From Office

Maltese table tennis champion Gabriel Grixti said that the Maltese Olympic Committee officials who were responsible for his exclusion from the national Small States of Europe squad in favour of four naturalised players should be immediately removed from their positions.

In an impassioned statement, Grixti accused the MOC of adopting a tactic of “dead silence in the hope that the public will forget the “injustices and atrocities committed against Maltese athletes.”

He warned that the MOC board responsible for the selection of athletes “twisted the process to serve their own interests, blatantly ignoring the official criteria” to the prejudice of athletes like him who ended up getting snubbed.

Grixti posed the following three questions to the board.

“Why was I discriminated against, especially when other members of the team did not meet the same criteria?”

“How is it possible that being a Maltese National Champion not once, not twice, but three times in the past four years is still not enough to earn a rightful place on the national team, which has now been overtaken by foreign-born athletes?”

“Why is the MOC refusing to be transparent about who made these decisions and how they were taken? What exactly are they hiding?”

“Is this what Maltese sport has come to, a place where people are too afraid to speak up?” he questioned.

“MOC President, Mr Julian Pace Bonello, can you justify the decisions made by your technical board?”

“I now publicly call on the MOC’s technical board to take responsibility for their actions.”

“People must be held accountable. Those making such decisions should be removed from office without delay.”

He noted that the MOC’s Athletes’ Rights and Responsibilities Declaration state that athletes have the right to compete without being subjected to any sort of discrimination, that they have a right to a transparent, fair and clean sporting environment, and that they have the right to access clear and timely information on athlete and competition-related matters.

“Let that sink in,” he concluded.
