Maltese Taxi Driver Given Suspended Sentence For Running Over Woman At 110km Per Hour On Zebra Crossing

A 27-year-old taxi driver, Renald Aquilina, was given a suspended sentence for running over a woman on a zebra crossing at a very high speed in Gżira seven years ago.
The woman, who used to be a bank manager, suffered life-changing injuries due to this incident – so much so, that she was not even able to testify, her husband said.
She suffers from memory loss, cannot read, and cannot even take care of her physical needs alone, and as a result, she had to be given a less demanding job at her bank.
Aquilina was working as a taxi driver on 16th September 2016 when he hit the 50-year-old bank manager at 110km per hour. An eyewitness described how the impact tossed the woman to the other side of the road.
Magistrate Yana Micallef Stafrace found the defendant guilty of causing grievous bodily harm to the victim and driving recklessly in a built-up area.
She took his age, 20 at the time, into consideration when suspending a year’s sentence for four years while suspending his license for four years and fining him €1,683.
He was also ordered to undergo a drug rehabilitation program.
Do you think that this is a fair sentence?
