A shocking case of theft came to light in court today, with police charging a man with dressing up as a postman to get a woman to open her front door and subsequently robbing her house.

41-year-old Mark Anthony Cardona and 28-year-old Ryan Briffa, both of whom are unemployed, were charged with aggravated theft, holding a person against her will, causing her slight injuries and carrying a knife without a police license.

A third man was also arrested in connection with the robbery but he wasn’t charged today after being hospitalised with chest pains shortly before the arraignment.

Prosecuting Inspector Fabian Fleri recounted how the three men had robbed a 58-year-old woman’s Qormi home on 11th January. One of them disguised himself as a postman, prompting the woman to open her door and unwittingly let the three thieves into her home. The thieves made off with gold, money and a CCTV decoder, but were later apprehended by police, who had investigated CCTV footage, mobile phone data and clothing tests.

As no request for bail was made, the men were remanded in custody.

The men are being defended by lawyers Franco Debono, Amadeus Cachia and Noel Bartolo.
