Man Allegedly Beaten Unconscious By Ħamrun Police Officers Accused Of Tormenting Other Migrants
One of the victims of horrific attacks by police officers in Ħamrun was beaten in the chest and ribs until he lost consciousness.
Now-suspended officers Jurgen Falzon, Rica Mifsud Grech and Luca Brincat have been charged with kidnapping, abuse of authority, illegal arrest and holding a person against their will over the case.
Previous testimony has already revealed their alleged aggression.
However, today in court, Sergeant Alex Gauci, who is the superior of the three accused, revealed that one officer came forward to recount the incident.
The victim, a dark-skinned man, was picked up while the officers were doing their rounds. He was taken to a spot and was allegedly attacked and abandoned there.
Worse yet, a little later, the police officers returned to the spot with another alleged victim.
It was not the only account Gauci heard. Another officer told him that the accused would find people sleeping outside and would taser them and slap them in the face.
In one incident, the officers allegedly picked up an African man and took him to the Qormi valley, where he was beaten and pelted with stones.
One of the officers who reported the incident, Lydon Azzopardi, returned after the attack to help the person.
Gauci did face his own questioning and denied that he ever ordered the police officers to take drunk people in Ħamrun to Marsa.
In the sitting, it was also revealed that one of the victims, a 33-year-old Somali national, suffered from a number of mental health issues and was once a patient at Mount Carmel hospital.
He had displayed aggressive behaviour and was addicted to alcohol and cocaine, a doctor said. However, she added that she never saw him attack anyone.
Magistrate Joe Mifsud is presiding over the case, while lawyers Veronique Dalli, Edmond Cuschieri and Franco Debono are defending the three officers.
