A Nigerian man was arrested at the Malta International Airport after he was found hiding a kilo of cocaine in his stomach.

Police said the 35-year-old man arrived in Malta from Brussels at 10:30pm on Saturday and was stopped by officers due to “suspicious activity”. Although initial inspections didn’t reveal any illegal substances, the police decided to investigate further because the man appeared worried and uncooperative.

A police dog was called in and indicated to officers that the man might be carrying drugs in his stomach. The man was then sent to Mater Dei, where X-Ray tests revealed he was carrying around 100 capsules in his stomach, amounting to 1kg of cocaine with an estimated street value of around €130,000.

Police investigations are ongoing.
