A 39-year-old man has been sentenced to 13 months in prison for the shocking assault of a sunbather in Valletta.

The attack, which happened on 28th August 2020 along Triq il-Lanca shocked the nation, particularly after the victim opened up over the incident.

She described her assault in detail in an interview with the Times of Malta, saying she was sunbathing in Valletta and speaking to her father on the phone when the man approached her with a net in his hand.

She said she asked him to maintain his physical distance, as it was during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He then kicked her in the face and assaulted her, leaving her to fear she would be raped and murdered.

She sustained a fracture and heaving bleeding during the attack.

Fredrick Mifsud, a 39-year-old man from Siġġiewi, was sentenced earlier today.

Police arrested Mfisud after reviewing CCTV footage in the area. He admitted to police that he attacked the woman during interrogation. He insisted that he committed the attack because of his PTSD and alcohol abuse.

“I am morally convinced that this was a capricious, terrifying and baseless attack on a person who was going about her business talking to her father,” Magistrate Nadine Lia said.

He will now be sentenced to 13 months in prison.
