Man Sentenced To Four Years In Prison For Arson Near Gozo Stadium

A 32-year-old man, Roderick Monreal, has been sentenced to four years in prison after confessing his involvement in an arson attack in Gozo.
The crime, which occurred near the Gozo Stadium in Xewkija, involved him setting a van on fire and inflicting property damage to the Gozo Football Association (GFA).
On 1st September, 2021, Monreal set a van on fire in the parking area near the Gozo Stadium.
Alongside this act of arson, Monreal also caused damage to property owned by the GFA, while additionally breaching previous court conditions.
Inspector Bernard Charles Spiteri charged Monreal with these crimes, and while Monreal pleaded guilty to the charges, and a day later, he informed the court that he had compensated the GFA with a sum of €1,900.
In deciding the sentence, Magistrate Simone Grech took into account a report prepared by a probation officer regarding Monreal. She also took into consideration the fact that Monreal was one of five individuals charged in relation to this crime.
Along with the four-year prison term, Monreal was also placed under a treatment order for three years. A restraining order was also issued to protect the victim from any potential future harm.
