Man Who Used Drugs In Malta’s Prison Nine Years Ago Gets Three Month Sentence

A man who used drugs in prison nine years ago has been sentenced to three months in prison.
Joseph Grech, who is now 58-years-old, was serving a sentence inside Corradino Correctional Facility in March 2012 when officers conducted a routine search inside his cell.
The officers uncovered two pieces of burned foil and a minimal amount of heroin. Grech was the only inmate residing within the cell.
A witness had claimed that Grech had swallowed something before the search. However, an x-ray uncovered nothing within his system. Statements given to police by Grech were dismissed because he was not given the right to legal assistance during his interrogation.
Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras said there was no doubt that Grech was using heroin in his cell, finding him guilty of possession, noting that the amount found on his person was minimal.
Still, Grech was sent to three months in prison, with the Magistrate taking into account his previous criminal record.
The Magistrate said that the reason behind the massive delay in proceedings was because Grech did not appear for several sittings.
