One of the three men charged with the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia is cooperating with the police and is now fearing for his life, blogger-activist Manuel Delia has stunningly claimed.

In a blogpost, Delia said he is informed that Vincent Muscat has lost considerable weight in recent months as a result of his refusal to eat prison food, presumably because he fears it could be poisoned.

“He is refusing to eat prison food and is making it a point of sharing the food his family brings him with his inmates,” Delia wrote. “It is clear, at least to my mind, that Vincent Muscat is fearing for his life.”

Delia said that Muscat has informed the police of an intermediary who was involved in the commissioning of Caruana Galizia’s murder and that the interviews were conducted in secret because he fears retribution from the other two suspects, the brothers George and Alfred Degiorgio.

Sunday Times of Malta reported today that Muscat’s lawyer Arthur Azzopardi intends to summon Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, his chief of staff Keith Schembri, Justice Ministr Owen Bonnici, police commissioner Laurence Cutajar and Attorney General Peter Grech, to the witness stand.

Delia suggested that Azzopardi’s tactic is to get these high-profile people to confirm under oath that his client has cooperated with the police and then ask the court to take this into account if and when they sentence him.

Muscat, who police believe to be a career criminal, was arrested in December 2017 along with the Degiorgio brothers. Police believe he acted as a spotter, watching Caruana Galizia drive out of her home and informing his accomplices. However, Azzopardi has cast doubt on this theory, noting that his client is blind in his right eye and has impaired vision in his left one, the result of being shot at in 2014.
