March In Gżira To Mark 77 Years Since The Palestinian Nakba And Demand Justice For Gaza

A public march is being held this Thursday 15th May, in Gżira to mark the 77th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba, a term meaning catastrophe, used to describe the mass displacement and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians during the creation of the State of Israel in 1948.
The event, organised by several local activist groups and endorsed by dozens more, will also serve as a call to action against the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The march will start at 6pm at the Council of Europe Garden in Gżira and will proceed to St Anne’s Square.
At least 750,000 Palestinians were displaced in 1948, their homes destroyed, their right of return denied.
Today, that number has multiplied across generations, with millions still stateless and enduring occupation, apartheid policies and ongoing military aggression.
Now, with Gaza facing unprecedented destruction, organisers say the situation is more urgent than ever.
Over 17,000 children have been killed in Gaza in just over a year. Entire neighbourhoods have been wiped out.
And with Israel under investigation for genocide by the International Court of Justice, Malta, and the world, is being called on to act.
The demonstration is being held urging the Maltese government to:
- Officially recognise the State of Palestine
- Enforce an arms embargo on Israel
- Sanction and de-flag vessels and individuals linked to the arms trade supporting Israel’s war effort
- suspend collaboration with companies and institutions complicit in the occupation
It also calls on the EU to:
- Suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement until Israel complies with the ICJ ruling
- Suspend Israel from European sports events and Eurovision
This week’s march is organised by the Embassy of Palestine in Malta, Moviment Graffitti, Ġustizzja għall-Palestina, The Lebanese Advocates, The Watermelon Warriors and Youth for Palestine and has been endorsed by over 15 NGOs, political parties, and grassroots organisations.
