Mario Degiorgio, the eldest brother of the two men alleged to have killed Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, has been charged with money laundering and blackmail.

His arrest came in the wake of a series of investigations centered around secret voice recordings of Melvin Theuma, the middle-man of the Caruana Galizia murder plot.

Police inspector Leanne Bonello told the court that Degiorgio was working together with his brothers, and others, but insisted that blackmail charges could only be supported after police spoke with Theuma.

The court also heard of how police played back a series of recordings implicating Degiorgio in his crimes during his interrogation. However, he chose to remain silent at the time.

Six civilian witnesses were ready to take the stand and testify, according to police, who withheld their identities for the time being.

Degiorgio pled not guilty to the charges and was remanded in police custody. In turn, the court upheld the prosecution’s request for an attachment and freezing over of his assets, while urging all witnesses to come forward at the earliest.
