The full story behind how a religious Marsa statue fell over and was damaged has been revealed by the town’s mayor.

“Update,” Josef Azzopardi said, sharing an image of a statue of Our Lady Of Lourdes and the praying Santa Bernardina in front of her.

“That which seemed to be an act of vandalism was not vandalism at all,” he said. “Superintendent Sandro Camilleri just spoke to me after checking the CCTV, and the police have come to the conclusion that a devotee went to hug Santa Bernardina after praying in front of her – and her face fell off.”

“It seems that her head had already been fixed and just fell off when it was hugged.”

The local community had been calling for the “vandal” behind the damaged statue to be found and face consequences – however, the latest revelation has closed the the story for most, though some wondered why the devoted worshipper hadn’t spoken out about what happened while investigations continued.

“We are being too gentle here – as if that statue is something one just hugs… and then you break it and not speak out,” questioned one person online.
