Marsaskala Grandmother Fears For Her Life As Construction Continues Above Her Family’s Heads

A woman living in Marsaskala is living in fear that she may fall victim to a construction accident as works go on above her home.
“I have been calling and writing the authorities for months about it, but to no avail. I am in direct danger myself because if a wall collapses it’ll fall directly in my back yard which my young grandchildren, my pets and myself use all the time,” Miriam Camilleri told Lovin Malta.
Living in Triq L-Imriekeb, she shared images of cranes and workers placing bricks atop the adjacent building, directly above the Camilleris. And with near daily stories of incidents occurring on building sites, she’s been left full of anxiety that something may happen to her.
“I am really scared. They will be doing concrete soon and if anything should happen it will be a disaster for sure.”

Having spoken to both the BCA as well as a health inspector, Camilleri hoped that authorities could ensure work was being done by the books, and not being forced to confront contractors herself.
However, she hasn’t been left feeling safe after speaking to an inspector.
“I was told once by one inspector that it will cost the contractor a lot of money to make some kind of protection and believe me I couldn’t believe my ears because a person’s life has no price on it,” she recounted.
“This has been going on for months now,” she said. “I am now waiting for the concrete to be done on the roof so God knows what can happen and what can fall in my yard. And what about when plastering and painting of the built wall will be taking place? There will be people hanging with tools and God knows what directly onto my yard with no protection for me whatsoever.”
She pointed towards incidents of workers falling several floors while on site, simply saying: “Imagine someone falls in my yard. It will kill me with the shock.”
