Details on a human trafficking and prostitution ring allegedly run by Duncan Caruana and his childcare centre owner wife, Francesca Caruana, and their arrest have been revealed in court.

In a court sitting against the Caruanas, police inspectors revealed that they first heard of the prostitution ring through an anonymous tip and immediately began conducting surveillance on the couple and their place of operations.

Police quickly noticed that the property, which is in Marsaskala, would be frequented by numerous men, who were seen entering and exiting the building. Police estimated that clients would spend anywhere between 15 minutes to an hour in the building.

An arrest warrant was issued soon after police compiled their evidence and upon entering the house, police found a naked woman standing behind the door.

Cash in varying quantities and sex toys were also discovered in different rooms belonging to the sex workers, along with an abundance of condoms. Many of the women did not have many possessions beyond their mobiles, passports, a change of clothes, and lingerie.

Some of the women suffered from poor sexual health with one woman even contracting a genital infection.

She even allegedly visited a doctor with Duncan Caruana, who was  pretending to be her partner and warned him that his ‘girlfriend’ was sleeping around.

Caruana would allegedly arrive each morning to collect the money and clean up the place for other clients during the day.

Mobile data extracted from the devices of Duncan and Francesca Caruana revealed that they were the ones who would communicate with the prospective clients, acceding to requests for anal or unprotected sex without the consent of the sex workers.

The Caruanas would even reportedly joke between them about the sex workers, referring to one woman as “il-maħmuġa” (the dirty one) and “il-kerha” (the ugly one).

The police had previously revealed that Duncan Caruana would allegedly charge €50 for every 30 minutes with the women, collecting the payment from clients himself, keeping half of it.

His wife, Francesca, was also allegedly part of the operation, organising meetings with potential clientele. She would also tell the women by text when to open the door for them.

Social media accounts of the pair indicate a relatively lavish lifestyle, with Duncan Caruana regularly posting images of his three Mercedes cars, sometimes even in front of the childcare centres in question.

The couple has assembled a significant legal team to fight their case with Edward Gatt, Mark Vassallo, Ishmael Psaila and Shaun Zammit all representing the pair.

The Caruanas have pleaded not guilty.

The next sitting will take place on 29th August.
