Marsaskala Resident Accused Of Murdering And Burning Two People On Greek Island Charged
Police have arrested and prosecuted a man suspected of carrying out a double murder on the Greek island of Aegina and burning his two victims.
Ledjon Brakaj, a 36-year-old Albanian national who lives in Marsaskala, was arrested today on the strength of a European Arrest Warrant issued by Greece last March.
Brakaj is suspected of murdering retired souvenir shop owner Irini Marmarino and her nephew Lambros Protonotarios inside her home back in 2015 and robbing them of some €780,000 in cash and valuable objects.
According to Greek media outlet Anikoluli.Gr, the victims were beaten up and burned alive.
Piraeus coroner Elias Bogiokas was quoted as saying the victims were attacked by kicks, punches or a stick and then slowly burned alive.
Maltese inspectors Kurt Ryan Farrugia and Robinson Mifsud testified that Brakaj was arrested after his fingerprints matched those sent by the Greek authorities.
However, Brakaj’s lawer Franco Debono countered that this evidence wasn’t presented in court and therefore shouldn’t be relied upon. He also warned that his client’s name doesn’t match the name on the Greek arrest warrant.
The defence didn’t request bail and magistrate Noel Bartolo ordered that Brakaj be remanded in custody pending a sitting next week, during which Greek extradition procedures will be discussed.
