Marsaxlokk Residents Raise Alarm After TM Allocates Tourist Coach Boarding Bay In Residential Area

Marsaxlokk residents have raised the alarm after Transport Malta allocated an alighting and boarding bay for tourist coaches in a residential area.

After several embellishment projects were executed, including two large parking areas at each end of the town, TM decided to locate a space for buses carrying tourists to board and alight their passengers in a residential area.

While speaking with Lovin Malta, residents explained how the new bays situated along Triq Gulino Maniscalo are blocking access to the parking spaces, as well as negatively impacting their quality of life.

“The situation is unsustainable for the residents and dangerous for the tourists and the people in the area,” one resident told Lovin Malta.

“It’s unsustainable for residents as the once peaceful area has become virtually a bus terminus. A number of buses, sometimes up to six, are always in the street with their engine on,” they explained.

“We residents had to spend the summer with our windows closed to avoid exhaust in our homes. Our quality of life has been affected considerably.”

To add insult to injury, Transport Malta located the boarding and alighting bays right in front of the parking spaces, therefore blocking access to the car park.

“The way these alighting bays were created is a ticking timebomb. The bays are located in front of parking spaces for normal cars, thus blocking the cars.”

“TM created a pedestrian path between the cars and the buses to provide some means for tourists to move around. This is a dangerous arrangement, especially on Sundays when many people visit the Marsaxlokk market.”

Lovin Malta sent questions to Transport Malta regarding the matter, which were left unanswered at time of publishing.

The resident also explained how they spoke to some of the drivers, who said that they are finding it difficult to work in this area and prefer their previous working procedure where they parked in a non-residential area.

“I have sent emails to TM and received no acknowledgment. I have sent emails to MPs, but there has been no progress,” the resident added.

Do you think residents need to be consulted more before coach bay are installed in their street?
