Mass Power Outages Reported All Over Malta Amidst Maintenance Works On National Electricity Grid
UPDATE: Enemalta has said that the incident arose after “a difficult in the electricity transmission from Sicily through the Malta-Italy Interconnector”, which disrupted supply to nearly a third of the country’s electricity.
“Electricity supply is being gradually restored through alternative capacity at the Delimara Power Station,” Enemalta went on to say.
A number of localities all over Malta are currently experiencing power outages, Net News reports.
Localities do not seem to be restricted to any particular area, as everywhere from Qawra and St. Paul’s Bay to Żabbar and Għaxaq have reportedly been effected. Other localities that are reporting electricity outages include Swieqi, Pieta’, Msida, Fgura, Mosta, Imtarfa, Għargħur, Madliena, Pembroke, Attard, Birkirkara, Santa Luċija, Gudja, Għaxaq, Żabbar, St. Julian’s and some areas of Sliema. Some areas have already started getting their power back, but others remain without electricity at the time of writing.
Times of Malta also reported how the Mrieħel traffic lights were not working as of 11:30am, and that several alarm systems over the area had been spontaneously triggered as a result of the power cut.
Of course, along with online reports of different localities being hit, it wasn’t long until the sarcastic (and of course politically-charged) comments started pouring in onto Facebook. “It must be the interconnector from Sicily with all this bad weather,” one user remarked.
Enemalta’s website has a list of planned network maintenance which would result in power cuts, but today’s list only has two areas; Xewkija and Mellieħa.
More information does reveal that there are “scheduled maintenance works on the national electricity grid”, however, which would explain why a disruption or malfunction would lead to wider areas being hit by power cuts.
