Mater Dei Hospital is currently investigating an aggressive confrontation between a patient and a nurse earlier this week.
On Wednesday 14th September, a verbal confrontation occurred between a nurse and a patient in Brown ward M2 after the patient asked to be moved to another bed.
Speaking to Lovin Malta, the patient’s husband detailed how a nurse showed “aggressive behaviour” after asking to be relocated. However, the Ministry claims that it was actually the man and his wife who were aggressive with a carer, nurses and another patient in the same ward.
“My wife hadn’t slept in three days because of this woman, and so, I asked the nurses to relocate my wife to a quieter room,” he detailed.
“The nurse started yelling at me, she was acting as if she was going crazy, waving her finger in her face. There were other nurses holding her back,” he said.
He also claimed that the nurse appeared as if she was going to get physical with the patient, however, the altercation did not reach that point.
“She’s now scared to take her medicine through the IV cause she’s scared they’re now going to try to sabotage her,” he expressed.
The husband then called the police to make a report, and after multiple attempts, a policeman from the Msida police station went to Mater Dei.
Lovin Malta reached out to the Health Ministry to acquire a comment on the matter.
“Mater Dei Hospital is looking into this incident. However, so far it has transpired that the individuals referred to in your question were threatening and being aggressive towards a carer, nurses and another patient in the same ward,” a representative for the Ministry told Lovin Malta.
“A senior nursing manager, medical officer and four security personnel were present during this ordeal. The patient remained aggressive despite being transferred to another ward and persisted in verbally harassing the nurses during her transfer.”
“While the necessary investigations are still ongoing, the hospital reiterates that it does not tolerate abuse, both verbal and physical, towards its staff and promotes reciprocal respect between staff and patients.”
