Alfred and George Degiorgio are serving a 40-year prison sentence after confessing their role in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

The brothers admitted to having planted and detonated the car bomb that killed the investigative journalist on the first day of their trial by Jury a year ago.

In 2021, Camilleri appeared on behalf of the Attorney General’s office in the case against Jamie Vella, Robert and Adrian Agius, and George Degiorgio over the two separate murders of lawyer Carmel Chircop and Daphne Caruana Galizia.

However, this week Camilleri filed a judicial protest against the Correctional Services Agency CEO and the Minister for Home Affairs claiming that the rights of the Degiorgio brothers were breached, Newsbook reported.

The lawyer is claiming that the brothers were denied prison leave to attend the funeral of a family member, without explanation. Camilleri said that the law implies that the brothers must be provided with a reason for the denial of such a request.

Camilleri worked for five years for the office of the AG before stepping down this year to become a Constitutional and criminal defense attorney.

This all comes despite a public inquiry proposal that prosecutors should be barred from appearing for people they’ve already prosecuted. 

This inquiry was the result of an investigation into lawyer Charles Mercieca who also switched from the AG’s office to the defence team of murder suspect in the Daphne case Yorgen Fenech.

Moreover, Daphne’s son showed serious disdain at the way this case is being treated as opposed to others by the criminal justice system, seemingly referring to the €10,000 fine that was given to someone who made a meme about Down’s Syndrome.

The phrase “banana republic” generally refers to a country that has a ruthless or corrupt leader who relies on the military and destroys state institutions for the sake of power.
