Matthew Caruana Galizia, the son of late journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, has warned that PL deputy leader Chris Cardona was yesterday “credibly accused” of his mother’s murder.

In a Facebook post, Caruana Galizia questioned why the authorities haven’t taken action against Cardona after alleged murder middleman Melvin Theuma said yesterday that Cardona had passed on money to suspected triggerman Alfred Degiorgio via a second middleman.

Former Deputy Police Commissioner Silvio Valletta and Opposition Leader Adrian Delia were also revealed to have had intimate meals with main suspect Yorgen Fenech.

Today in court, as Melvin Theuma said one astonishing thing after another… I sat there wondering why the magistrate doesn’t simply order the immediate arrest and interrogation of them both [Silvio Valletta and Chris Cardona], as well as a search of their residences and seizure of their phones and communications. Instead, the only order that was made by the court was for us to put on our masks. What kind of a justice system is this? A bad one,” Caruana Galizia wrote.

“Two of its members [Chris Cardona and David Gatt] are credibly accused of murder and threatening a further murder: the Chamber of Advocates does nothing and says nothing. Its Deputy Leader is credibly accused of murder: the ruling party does nothing.”

“Its leader is found to have attended lunch parties with a murderer. The Opposition party does nothing and says nothing. And the dozen deputy and assistant police commissioners are doing what, planning their next kannoli party with one of these murderers?” he said in a separate post.

Under questioning from lawyer and PN MP Jason Azzopardi during yesterday’s sitting of the case against main suspect Yorgen Fenech, Melvin Theuma revealed that former Minister and Deputy Labour Party Leader Chris Cardona passed on money to Alfred Degiorgio, one of the alleged killers. The questions were related to an alleged €350,000 fee put towards the assassination revealed in secret recordings between Theuma and Fenech.

“His name began with B. This was the middleman between Cardona and Fulu. I’m not sure who showed me that photo, whether Johann [Cremona] or Yorgen. But the police showed me that photo too,” Theuma said.

“[Cardona] was worried because of Daphne’s murder. Fenech told me he had swallowed some pills, and that is why he was admitted to the hospital. He’s quite sure of what he’s saying,” he continued.

Theuma revealed another link between the Degiorgios and Cardona. He claimed that Alfred’s brother, Mario, once mentioned David Gatt, who sent a message that if the Degiorgios pinned the blame on Cardona, he would kill them.

He also claimed that Gatt was meant to make available €400,000 to the Degiorgios for the trial by jury.

Azzopardi told the court that Gatt and Cardona share an office.

During a sensational sitting, Theuma also revealed that the former Deputy Police Commissioner Silvio Valletta and the current Opposition Leader also had intimate meals at Fenech’s Haz-Żebbuġ farmhouse.

Cardona has dismissed the claims as “lies and nonsense” while Delia insists he never met with Fenech after he was revealed to be the owner of 17 Black.

Cardona’s name has emerged multiple times throughout the case. Most recently it was revealed that his number was the only one found on one of Alfred Degiorgio’s phones.

He was ousted as Economy Minister during last year’s political crisis after he was the subject of an alleged frame-up attempt over the murder. He was not retained in Prime Minister Robert Abela’s cabinet and recently stepped down as an MP. He is still the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.
