MED5 Kicks Off In Valletta As Southern Leaders Try To Find Common Solution For Migration
A key summit between Europe’s southern nations has kicked off in Valletta.
The Ministers of the Interior and Migration of Malta, Greece, Italy, and Spain, as well as the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior of Cyprus, will be discussing a common position on asylum and immigration.
These countries are on the forefront of the ongoing migration crisis out of Africa and the Middle East, and are often at loggerheads over who is responsible for those found at sea. This summit aims to bring the nation’s goals closer together.
Malta’s Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri will be chairing the meeting.
During the session, they’ll also discuss FRONTEX priorities to prevent irregular arrivals with its new executive director.
The Ministry of the Interior of Sweden was invited as the current Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
