Mediterranean ‘Hurricane’ Hitting Sardinia Tonight Threatens To Bring Heavy Rain And Huge Swells To Malta
Brace yourselves ladies and gentlemen; turns out Malta might be in for even more extreme weather than we initially thought.
As a Mediterranean hurricane (or medicane) is now pretty much definitely hitting the east of Sardinia tonight, its movement towards the central Mediterranean might just see it landing on top of the Maltese islands.
Earlier today, local weather forecasting page Malta Weather took to Facebook to issue a warning, saying the “main threat” for our islands seems to be “huge swells up to 11 metres high”, along with “very strong winds and rain showers that may be heavy, thundery and with hail at times”.
It appears like the above might be the case for the rest of the week, with Thursday, Friday and Saturday showing the possibility of this extreme weather.
Malta Weather went on to explain that the very warm core system might also end up hindering the Gozo Ferry service, but it is not yet known whether the intensity of the current weather system will be that intense after all. In other words, we’re going to have to brace for the worst and hope for the best… especially seeing as Malta has had a lot of near misses and inaccurate weather forecasts in the past.
Back on the Italian island, tonight’s Mediterranean hurricane is expected to bring hail and snow to Sardinia, but what we still don’t know is what will exactly happen once the weather system moves further south towards the Maltese islands.
Thundery and windy showers are indeed listed on Malta International Airport’s forecast page for the next three days, but it seems like the strongest winds on here are Force 7 gusts on Friday.
