One of Malta’s most prominent developers has resigned as the president of a football club to become a player for the same club.

Gozo’s Joseph Portelli will be looking to become a football player for Ħamrun Spartans, Replay reported today, saying he had tendered his resignation to the Ħamrun Spartans Committee as well as the Malta Football Association.

Under Maltese football rules, a president cannot be a player.

This is far from the first time Portelli’s desire to hit the field was made manifest.

Back in 2022, he had even taken to the pitch to score a late penalty to help Nadur Youngsters – his hometown – secure a 1-1 draw against Kerċem Ajax.
