Mellieħa Councillor Complains To Minister About Traffic Nightmare Caused By Roadworks

Mellieħa councillor Gabriel Micallef has written to Transport Minister Aaron Farrugia to express his concern that recent roadworks are causing significant traffic.

“The ongoing works on Mellieħa Road Hill, initiated without prior notice or consultation with the council, have resulted in extensive delays for residents, especially those in Mellieħa and Manikata,” Micallef wrote.

“The closures of roads leading to Għajn Tuffieħa and Miżieb, along with concurrent road works in Burmarrad, are compounding the challenges faced by the community.”

Micallef proposed that only congested areas should targeted one at a time so as to provide residents with better commuting options and that more police and transport officials be deployed to help manage the flow of traffic.

He also urged government authorities to better communicate with the local council about such works and road closures.

“The absence of prior notification, project timeframes or consultation with the council before commencing such road works is frustrating, leaving us and the residents feeling uninformed,” he said.

“The closures of essential routes to Għajn Tuffieħa and Miżieb, along with ongoing road works in Burmarrad, intensify this frustration as residents have to go through a challenging daily commute without clear information.”

“Witnessing such a disconnect between the authorities and the community is disheartening. We deserve better treatment.”
