Abandoned Mellieħa Festaval Hotel Set To Be Demolished And Reconstructed Under New Plans
A permit has been submitted to demolish and reconstruct the abandoned hotel lying above Mellieħa’s Għadira Bay, known as the Festaval Hotel.
According to the permit, which was submitted by Chris Mizzi on behalf of Mizzi Estates with architect Edwin Mintoff, the new development will cover five floors and consist of a reception area, hotel rooms, pool, restaurants, back of house, parking spaces and all other ancillary facilities required by a hotel.
However, the development technically lies outside the development zone and is surrounded by a Natura 2000 site, falling within a buffer zone for an Area of Ecological Importance
The site, which is mostly hidden by trees, lies right under the Red Tower in the area and overlooks both Għadira Bay and the nature reserve. It was originally designed by Richard England and has been abandoned for decades and left in ruins.
However, it has become a quirky off-the-beaten-track spot to visit with graffiti adorning most of its walls.
Plans to reconstruct the hotel are not new. An application to refurbish the hotel was submitted by AX Holdings in 1993 but was eventually withdrawn. Meanwhile, Mizzi first submitted an application in 1996.
There have also been numerous revisions to the proposal which has shifted from tourist bungalows to private villas.
The site plans do give some indication of the project and do seem to replicate the current structure. However, it appears that the original structure will need to be demolished given safety concerns.
What do you think of the plans?
