Mellieħa Man Steals Electric Cables, Causing Blackouts Throughout Tarxien, Paola And Żabbar
A number of blackouts across at least three localities in Malta resulted from a layer stealing electrical cables.
Andre Borg, 37, was accused of stealing €2,000, resulting in power cuts in several streets across Raħal Ġdid, Ħal Tarxien, and Ħaż Żabbar.
Borg was at the centre of a five-month investigation, after which they arrested him. Today, he appeared in court before Magistrate Joseph Gatt and was charged with aggravated theft during the months of January, April, and May.
Inspector Paul Camilleri, who led the prosecution together with Inspector Antonello Magri, told the court that the investigation began after they received reports of someone causing damage to electrical cables in several streets.
On 5th May, the police received a report from residents of Triq San Ġużepp in Raħal Ġdid, who reported seeing sparks coming from the wires.
The police launched an investigation and arrived at Borg’s location when he was caught cutting wires just a day after the residents’ report.
After hearing submissions, the Court refused Borg’s bail request as other witnesses still need to testify, including some who worked with Borg.
Upon bail being denied, Borg’s partner began crying in court.
