EuroPride Valletta 2023 kicks off next Thursday, and the 10-day will place a special focus on mental health and support services for attendees in need.

Rebecca Buttigieg, the Parliamentary Secretary for Reforms and Equality, detailed that a partnership with the Richmond Foundation and the Rainbow Support Service (MGRM) will offer professional psychological and social work assistance. This service will be stationed near the Triton Fountain within the EuroPride Village.

In discussions with Colette Farrugia Bennett, coordinator of the Rainbow Support Service, and Daniela Calleja Bitar, Acting CEO of the Richmond Foundation, Buttigieg highlighted that the high-profile nature of EuroPride can create stress for individuals still grappling with their identity. She noted that some may be in the midst of family identity crises, while others could be facing harassment and negative comments on social media due to prejudice and heterophobia.

Farrugia Bennett, who has a decade of experience working with the LGBTIQ+ community and their families, acknowledged that members of this community are particularly susceptible to mental health issues and societal stigmas. She added that despite strides in equality legislation, significant social challenges remain unaddressed, making EuroPride an ideal platform to tackle these issues.

Daniela Calleja Bitar, Richmond Foundation’s Acting CEO, called for heightened sensitivity to the struggles of the LGBTIQ+ community. She emphasized the severe impact that prejudiced remarks can have on vulnerable individuals uncertain about their sexual identity.

Buttigieg affirmed that a key focus of the services provided during EuroPride would be mental health. She said that persistent societal prejudices against the LGBTIQ+ community stem from misguided beliefs and that educational efforts are necessary to change these harmful attitudes.

She wrapped up her remarks by highlighting that this year’s EuroPride, the 29th edition hosted by Malta, is not just a festival but a celebration of love and the progress achieved in the fight for equality.
