Labour’s Electoral Fall Partly The Fault Of Muscat Protest: Cyrus Engerer Shares Alfred Sant’s Statement
Former PL MEP, party leader and prime minister Alfred Sant attributed in part the Labour Party’s recent electoral fall to the Joseph Muscat protest held outside of court.
Sant gave a list of reasons that he believes caused PL’s voting majority to drop from 42,000 to 8,700 in just five years and, in an Instagram post, former PL MEP Cyrus Engerer shared the most salient points.
“Alfred Sant lists reasons for Labour’s loss of votes:
1. The show of support for Joseph Muscat organised in front of the courts;
2. Government’s dilettantism;
3. Government’s lack of transparency and;
4. Partit Laburista’s clientelism which is counterproductive.”
Speaking to the Times of Malta, Sant explained that the protest undermined the PL’s image and authority.
He stated that the loss in majority might be consequential to the party prioritising PN-leaning people whom it wants to attract or because the electorate does not support the style of government which “in their view reflects obduracy, dilettantism, lack of transparency, in your face clientelism”.
However, Sant was sure to mention that this performance was not an indication of an “opposition party going places”. He continued to criticise the political strategies of third party and independent candidates.
