Watch: Thomas Bajada Criticises Fit For 55 Package Within EU Green Deal
Newly elected MEP Thomas Bajada has criticised the EU Green Deal in his first comments to Lovin Malta after securing a seat at the coveted institution, saying that the Fit for 55 package must include safeguards for Maltese agriculture.
Bajada explained that the European Commission’s impact assessments – which are done before a law is drafted – do not accurately reflect our small island-nation – this, he is set on improving.
When asked for specific laws or issues in which Malta’s realities are being neglected, Bajada referenced the Fit for 55 package within the Green Deal. He stated that the package rightfully reflected global environmental issues but failed to consider Malta’s unique needs as a small island.
He stated specifically that the Fit for 55 package requires safeguards for Malta when it comes to local agricultural products to ensure that they are not at a disadvantage to foreign ones.
Meanwhile, when asked about his thoughts on the largely narrowed voting gap between the PL and PN, he said that is clear that the electorate needs “humble” and “authentic” politics that speaks in the name of the people – “this is why I was elected, because I listened to the people”.
