Metal Barriers Block Zebra Crossing At Fast Ferry Terminal As Alex Borg Raises Safety Concerns

Opposition MP Alex Borg has expressed concern over the closure of pedestrian access near the fast ferry terminal in Malta, where metal barriers were installed in place of a zebra crossing previously used by commuters.

In a statement, Borg said he had received several complaints about the closure, calling it a “wrong decision” that lacks common sense particularly as no alternative route was provided.

“Beyond the wasted time, this decision could lead to an unnecessary accident,” Borg said, highlighting the lack of a safe and convenient alternative for ferry users who need to continue their journey on foot.

Borg also criticised the lack of long-term planning surrounding the fast ferry service, pointing out that both the Malta and Gozo terminals are no longer adequate to handle the volume of passengers using them daily.

He called on the relevant authorities to urgently reconsider the decision or, at the very least, implement a secure and accessible alternative.

Borg said he has repeatedly raised concerns about the terminal infrastructure in both public statements and formal correspondence, the latest of which dates back to March this year.

“We need to start looking at alternatives and a concrete plan that can be implemented in the short term, so that this essential service remains strengthened for the benefit of all Gozitans and Maltese,” he concluded.
