MFA ‘May Elect Not To Accept’ Joseph Portelli’s Resignation As Ħamrun Spartans President
The Malta Football Association may not accept developer Joseph Portelli’s resignation as president ahead of him hitting the pitch as a player.
“The Malta FA has taken note of media reports regarding the resignation of Joseph Portelli from his role as President of Ħamrun Spartans FC. The Association has indeed received such resignation, mindful that this may be related to a possible request from the club to register the same person as a player,” the MFA said in a statement hours after news of Portelli’s moves were made public.
“In that case, the Association may elect not to accept such resignation.”
“Rather, it would be referred to the competent bodies in compliance with its Reputational Risk Management Policy – a document that is public and which is endorsed by its Executive Board.”
Portelli’s announcement led to widespread reactions across Malta, with PN MP Albert Buttigieg dropping a “fat cat” jibe and countless others wondering if Ħamrun Spartans FC is seriously considering letting their former president become an actual player.
